Money is the 'organizing principal' of modern society. It is a 'meme' which promotes to the highest levels of power and authority in business and government those individuals most preoccupied with the creation of more money, to the exclusion of ethical and ecological values. Hence our economy is on a collision course with the ecology of Earth. How might one build ethical and ecological values into a monetary system, in addition to purely material, economic ones, in order to promote humanity's prospects for survival and quality of life?

Although the population of O'ahu is highly transient, an island seems like a good place to test out new applications for bringing power back to a local level. What kinds of projects can we think of to make collaboration between neighbors on this island more direct.

free ad-hoc specialized markets (used cars, crafts, veggies)
reusing abandoned public space

Maui Makers (Maui's Makerspace) has a federal grant to create an international program funding hackerspaces to promote humanity's long term survival and expansion into space. Our initial Call for Projects is out for $5k-$20, 3-4mo projects. Come talk about this and other Makerspace initiatives in Hawaii.

Humans evolved because we are makers - changing the world to better fit ourselves. Somewhere in last 40yrs much of that got lost in throw away culture of debt. Now it has re-emerged as the Maker Movement.
And a recognition that we are all makers -

I've got the great idea, now what?

We have the Hawaii Inventors Association here on Oahu, made up of about 120 inventors. But the success of an invention requires so much more than just the skills of the inventor. It needs a team that can pull together the money, the development tools, the prototyping, the marketing, the web site and a host of other talents. How can we bring those all together? How can we identify those inventions that have the best potential for success and work towards making it happen?

Between the high price of electricity (and rising) and the state and federal tax credits, solar power has really changed Hawaii. Aside from a utility scale solution, what are the next steps to getting to 40 - 50% of our energy from renewable power...

The City and County of Honolulu is thinking of creating a mobile app all about our favorite city, Honolulu. What would you like to see in this app? What features and functionality should it have? It will rely on open data so what data could this app draw from?

Is there interest in getting a group together to share in the effort to tackle the longer-term learning goals that iOS developers may have? For example, larger topics, such as CoreImage, Automated Testing, Auto Layout, OpenGL, Core Text, etc.

There is a fair amount of activity within pockets of neighbor island tech groups (Hilo, Kona, Maui). Nobody wants to island hop every month for a meetup. Are there better ways that we can connect?

When meeting startups at mainland incubators/accelerators, I've always been impressed by the brand name beta customers/partners they have, even in their early prototype stages. Whether its Nike, Amazon, Coca-Cola, I see them investing in their regional innovation economy. How do we replicate that here?

My website is functional but to make it great takes time and money. The straps on my boot are worn out. I can barely afford the 99 cent menu at McD let alone budget for ads or adwords pay-per-clicks. Am I alone? Can we string our shoestring budgets together and create a descent marketing campaign?
